The Tallowood Story

Tallowood Recording Studio was built from scratch on Jinibara land, Mount Glorious, Queensland, Australia during the years of 2019 to 2021. Much of the studio was constructed from a native Australian Eucalyptus called Tallow Wood that hung over the studio site. While we love trees and always want to protect them we also believe it’s better to construct buildings from either second hand materials or from materials from your property. So the beautiful but somewhat dangerous tree was felled and milled on site. After time spent drying the timber was used to construct the beautiful roof structure and cabinetry in the studio.

The studio’s interior was designed by producer Michael Josephson to create an environment that feels homely and professional. We want artists to feel a sense of home in Tallowood and of connection with nature. We believe this creates an atmosphere that allows artists to be themselves and create freely. Perhaps the most striking aspects of the design are the 4.5 metre high cathedral ceilings and expansive hard wood floors. The high ceilings and presence of wood throughout create a beautiful natural room sound. This is natural open sound is the complimented by a more treated area of the studio surrounding allowing us to achieve a more controlled sound. The studio has a number of subtle design features engineered to create a room with cohesive and musical phase relationships. The high angled roof and the wide open studio design combine to create a space with minimal phase issues such as standing waves or cone filtering. Although much thought that went into the internal acoustics of the building the primary design focus was really on creating a seamless creative experience that could flow between studio, home and nature. We believe in promoting a sense of community as well as creating music, frequently sharing meals with clients as well as giving space for artists to go on bush walks to clear their head between sessions.
