FAQs

Mixing is a stage in the music creation process that usually occurs after the recording phase. Mixing works on all of the different recorded elements of a song such as vocals, guitar, bass, keys and drums. The goal of mixing is to balance the level of all the various recorded “tracks” to make the overall song sound as good as possible. In addition to volume balance the mixing engineer also uses sound production tools such as Equalisation, Compression and tonal and ambient effects to enhance the emotional impact of the song.
A more tangible and “real world” way to understand the value of mixing is to think of mixing as the stage of the music making process that makes sure your music sounds as good as possible on all speakers. Sure your song should sound amazing in the studio but a great mix will sound incredible in the car, on your phone, in a club, on a UE Boom speaker, on headphones; ideally everywhere!

Mastering is the stage after mixing. Once all the individual tracks have been optimised and mixed together in the mixing stage to make a single finished song the mastering stage begins. The goal of mastering is to be a final stage before the release of the song(s) aimed at optimising the songs tone, impact and volume. The mastering engineer works on just the single WAV file of the entire song, while the mix engineer works on the relationship between the individual instruments in the song.
Mastering usually costs between $50 and $200 per song in Australia.
Mastering is common practice the world over in the process of a song being released. It is not necessarily essential for your project to be mastered, but what could be considered essential is for the finished product of your music to be on par with your vision, expectations and also competitively loud and well produced compared to other songs in the industry. Mastering is the last stage of the music production process that ensures your song is at its best and ready for release.

We suggest you send your songs off to a professional mastering engineer which we can help organise, however we provide discounted in-house mastering options that some artists opt for to save a bit on the budget.

More about recording at Tallowood Studio…
Vocals
Vocals are arguably the most important element of songs that contain vocals. We love recording vocals at Tallowood. We attempt to provide a comfortable and inspiring atmosphere with great quality gear. Our favourite vocal chain is our Vintage Neumann U87 (1971) into a Neve Neve 1073LB Mic Pre and then into a Neve 1073LBEQ EQ finally into the Neve 2264ALB Comp. We believe this is one of the most beautiful and natural recording chains in the world.
Keys etc
We currently have a modest collection of in-house keyboard, synth and piano options. We will soon hopefully have an in-house acoustic upright piano!
Although one of our strongest creative beliefs at Tallowood Studio is that limitations give birth to creativity! We love working with what you’ve got and a lot of our most interesting recordings have come from out-of-the-box techniques.
Drums
Another one of our great passions at Tallowood Studio is drum recording. We are blessed to have a big open wooden studio live room with high cathedral ceilings. This allows us to get a huge natural drum sounds. Or if we want a tighter more controlled drum sound we close mic and use baffles to achieve tight punchy drums. Our house kit is a re-furbished vintage Pearl kit that most drummers fall in love with immediately.
Acoustics
Tallowood’s resident engineer and producer Michael Josephson has always had a fascination with room acoustics and how they affect the music you create. The studio was designed from the ground up from scratch with acoustics in mind. The key design principle was the creation of a big open studio, with high angled ceilings and the presence of a lot of wood. This was the design focus because:
-Big open spaces create an acoustic environment where phase issues in recording have less negative impact on the song
-High angled ceilings have a good affect on phase relationships due to their height and also the angle prevents reflections from bouncing back directly into the microphones
-Wood is a reflective surface that due to the complexities in its pores creates a flattering natural sounding reflection.
Guitars
Recording acoustic guitars, electric guitars and bass guitars is a nuanced and sometimes technical art. We believe that recording guitars well requires vision. Where will the guitar sit in the mix when its finished? What role is it playing? Understanding your answer to these questions is an important step in getting a great guitar tone. At Tallowood we pride ourselves in having an efficient and intuitive guitar recording approach. Every guitar and every amp is different and we work hard to bring out the unique timbre of a guitar with clarity.
LIVE!
Tallowood Studio was designed to be great for live recording bands. Any opportunity we get to capture the energy of musicians playing together we take it. Obviously this approach doesn’t always suit the style pf music, but when it does Tallowood can facilitate a number of live setups to suit most bands.
